The Standard Grey chinchilla is one of the most common pet chinchillas. They're sold wholesale to petstores all around the globe. They're also the most common to be found in any reputable breeding program. Standards are always going to be needed in the breeding world. The standard coat is generally Grey on the face, and back, fading down the sides. Then they have a crisp white belly underneath.  Any color besides this is a mutation.

Beige

Homo Beige. Chinchilla Chateau
Beige Chinchillas come in 2 forms. They exist as Homozygous or Heterozygous. The Homo beige is lighter in color, and have bright red eyes.  The Hetero beige tends to be darker with deep ruby eyes. Both beiges have pink ears and can develop freckles on the ears , paws, and nose. Both Hetero and Homo beige have crisp white bellies.

Sunset Chinchillas - " Chocolate has no gradients or change in color. It is solid 100% same shade of brown everywhere (on the exterior). Dark tans will have a light bib or a light gradient 'skirt' around the sides, eyes, face, etc. ..Depends on the lines. Mine have light, some have dark. I've found the dark underfurred ones tend to oxidize more quickly. However, you can have a regular hetero beige with no ebony have chocolate underfur, it is all in the breeding. Chocolate is no barring. Extra dark can have slight variations on the barring.

Brown Velvet / TOV Beige "BV "

Ebony chinchillas are black. Their bellies, ears ( grayish black ) , and eyes are black. Some look more smokey with grey on them. They come in 4 shades. Light ebony, Medium Ebony, Dark Ebony, and Extra dark ebony.

Black Velvets ( also known as TOV "Touch of Velvet" ) Have very beautiful strong fur. They are masked with a deep black, that extends down their back and sides, which fades to a medium grey and quickly into a crisp white belly. Their veiling takes time to come in, so sometimes they look like dark standards with black masks until their veiling comes in. _

Whites

Whites come in many forms, so bare with me while I try to remember them all.

 Pink White - "PW"

Pink whites are white chinchillas who carry the beige gene. They have pink ears, red eyes, and mainly white fur. Some pink whites are pure white. Others have beige markings and freckles.

Tan White

Tan White Chinchillas are the same as pink white chinchillas, but crossed with ebony. The ebony gene and the beige gene are both expressed at the same time giving the chinchilla Tan markings. Some Tan whites do not show their markings at all.

A mosaic is basically any mutation crossed with a white. Most commonly when a white is bred to a standard. Mosaic patterns are random. There are special terms for common patterns.

- A chinchilla seen with white fur, grey ears, black eyes, and a grey tail with no markings or minimal markings is called a "Wilson White" in the USA.  A "Wilson White" is any white chin in the UK.

- A Chinchilla that is heavily marked or marbled is called an "extreme mosaic" because the harsh contrast.
